Chennai: Suspicions are being raised over the death of a 19-year-old youth who was airlifted to Gleneagles Global Hospitals in Tamil Nadu. He was declared brain dead at the hospital where V K Sasikala’s husband M Natarajan was eagerly awaiting an organ transplant.
According to few media reports, the youth named Karthik, a daily wage labourer had met with an accident on September 30 and was brain dead when he was airlifted to Gleneagles hospital where M Natarajan underwent a life-saving surgery on Wednesday. However, the hospital has refuted the claim saying that Karthik was flown in a critical state against medical advise late Tuesday night and was declared brain dead after eight hours of his arrival.
After his death, the hospital intimated the Tamil Nadu State Transplant Authority (Transtan) about a ‘potential organ donor’ and since Natarajan was on the top of the waitlist the organ transplant surgery was carried out.
While the hospital has denied any irregularities, the mere coincidence of finding a suitable donor gives rise to several questions such as why the hospital delayed treatment to Karthik if he was in a critical state, how a poor laborers family could afford to pay costs for airlifting him, whether the hospital had consulted his family before deciding to harvest his organs and the likes.
