New Delhi: The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition seeking to direct the Election Commission to disqualify Congress president Rahul Gandhi from contesting the Lok Sabha polls after he had “voluntarily acquired British nationality”.
The plea was filed by two Delhi residents on the basis of allegations made by BJP MP Subramian Swamy that a UK company’s record shows Gandhi holding British citizenship. Close on the heels of this development, the Home Ministry had immediately asked Gandhi to clarify the same.
Gandhi’s sister and Congress’ eastern UP in-charge Priyanka Gandhi Vadra responding to the same, said that everyone knows that her brother was born and raised in India.
The Supreme Court had dismissed a similar plea questioning Gandhi’s citizenship in 2015 questioning the “authenticity of the document” attached.
