A tragic incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj district has sparked outrage after a 10-year-old schoolgirl allegedly died by suicide following a reprimand by a teacher.

The child, a Class 5 student from Rampur village, had attended school with her younger sister as usual on Saturday.

Reprimand during school assembly

According to reports, the sisters were scolded by a teacher during a morning assembly inspection over untidy uniforms and personal hygiene.

The incident reportedly left the children deeply upset.

Family recounts distress

After returning home, both girls were said to be crying and narrated the incident to their mother. Shortly afterwards, the elder girl allegedly hanged herself inside the house.

The sudden death has left the family devastated.

Protests and public anger

The incident triggered strong reactions from locals, who gathered in large numbers and staged protests outside the school, bringing the child’s body to the premises.

Officials, including the Block Education Officer and Sub-Divisional Magistrate, reached the spot to control the situation and pacify the crowd.

Case registered against school staff

Police have registered a case against the teacher allegedly involved, along with the school principal and two others, based on a complaint filed by the child’s mother.

An investigation is underway to ascertain the sequence of events and determine accountability.

Call for sensitivity in schools

The incident has raised concerns about the emotional well-being of students and the need for greater sensitivity in handling children, especially in disciplinary situations.

Experts stress the importance of supportive school environments and counselling systems to prevent such tragedies.
