MALAPPURAM: A heartfelt moment unfolded at Pearl Buds School for differently-abled children on Wednesday, when students got a surprise visit from an elephant — a long-cherished dream come true for many of them.
The elephant, a gentle female named Kaveri, was brought to the school through the efforts of local animal enthusiast Shimil Atholy from Melmuri and former municipal councillor V Rinisha. The duo acted on learning that the children had always wished to see and touch an elephant up close.
Kaveri is owned by Shimil and was brought to the school around noon. Far from creating fear, her presence filled the school grounds with joy and wonder. About 40 children, including several in wheelchairs, eagerly gathered around her.
While a few were hesitant at first, their anxiety quickly turned into excitement. Laughter and cheers rang out as each child stepped forward to offer Kaveri a banana. In return, the elephant gently touched the children’s heads with her trunk, an act that touched the hearts of teachers and organisers alike.
“This event was meant to spread happiness among the children and to nurture a sense of love and empathy towards animals,” Shimil said.
The memorable encounter brought smiles, confidence, and unforgettable joy to the students — a perfect blend of compassion and connection between humans and animals.
