In a tragic incident, a 52-year-old security guard lost his life after falling into an open lift shaft on his very first day of work in Chembur East, highlighting serious safety concerns.
Fatal fall during first day at work
The deceased, Nathuram Sathvilkar, a resident of Ghatla in Chembur, had just begun his duties at the Vaibhav Laxmi Building No. 10 in Subhash Nagar on April 3.
According to police, he was being shown around the premises by a fellow guard, Dilip Kadam, around 6:50 am when the accident occurred.
Warning given moments before mishap
Kadam stated that he had warned Sathvilkar not to walk near the lift shaft in the parking area as it was open. However, within moments, Sathvilkar reportedly moved ahead and fell into the shaft.
The incident created panic, with Kadam raising an alarm and residents gathering at the scene.
Rescue efforts and death confirmation
Police from Chembur Police Station arrived at the spot shortly after, along with fire brigade personnel. Sathvilkar was pulled out of the shaft and rushed to Rajawadi Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Probe into safety lapses
Authorities have registered an accidental death report, which may be converted into a formal FIR if negligence is established.
Preliminary findings indicate significant safety lapses at the site. Officials noted the absence of CCTV cameras in the parking area and lack of proper barricading around the lift shaft, despite the building being occupied.
