New Delhi — A tragic accident on Sunday afternoon claimed the life of a senior Ministry of Finance official after a BMW SUV rammed into a motorcycle on Ring Road near Delhi Cantt metro station. The deceased has been identified as Navjot Singh, Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, police confirmed. His wife, who was riding pillion, sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment.
Accident details
According to police, the incident took place around 1 pm near Dhaula Kuan. Eyewitnesses reported that a BMW X5, allegedly driven by a woman, collided with Singh’s motorcycle, causing it to hit the central verge and then a bus. The impact left the car overturned on the road while the motorcycle lay mangled near metro pillar number 67.
Three police control room (PCR) calls were made regarding a traffic jam in the area, following which officials rushed to the spot. The injured, including the woman driver and her husband, were taken to hospital. Shortly after, police confirmed Singh’s death.
Eyewitness and family allegations
Navjot Singh’s son has alleged medical negligence, claiming that his father’s life might have been saved had he been taken to a hospital closer to the accident site.
“My parents were travelling on a bike. Around 1 pm, a BMW, driven by a girl, hit them. They were taken to a hospital 22 km away. If he had been taken to a nearby hospital, my father could have been saved. My mother is also severely injured,” he told PTI.
Police investigation
The BMW driver and her husband, residents of Gurugram, also sustained injuries and are admitted to hospital. Their statements are yet to be recorded. Police have registered an FIR and seized the vehicle involved. A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team visited the spot to collect evidence.
“Legal action is being taken. The accused, residents of Gurugram, have been identified. The vehicle has been seized, and further investigation is underway,” a senior police officer said.
Traffic disruption
Traffic movement along the Dhaula Kuan–Delhi Cantt metro station stretch was disrupted for a few hours due to the accident. Authorities restored normal flow after removing the damaged vehicles from the carriageway.
Broader concerns
This case adds to the growing list of high-profile road accidents in the capital involving speeding luxury cars. In recent months, multiple such incidents have sparked debate on road safety, emergency medical response, and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
Conclusion
The tragic death of Navjot Singh has once again raised concerns over reckless driving in Delhi and the need for swifter trauma care. While police continue their probe, the victim’s family has demanded accountability and stricter measures to prevent such fatal crashes in the future.
