Sewage flooding forces Madurai school students into community hall
MADURAI: Around 100 students from Thiruparankundram Panchayat Union Middle School in Chinthamani were forced to hold classes in a community hall on Monday after sewage water from the Kiruthumal river flooded their school premises.
The incident was triggered by the Water Resources Department (WRD) blocking a sewage channel near the school for ongoing bridge construction. The blockage caused sewage to overflow into the school campus on Friday evening.
Despite local residents raising the alarm over the weekend, no action was taken by authorities. When students returned on Monday, the campus remained waterlogged. Teachers first gathered the students outside a nearby temple before civic officials intervened and arranged for the community hall to be cleaned and used as a temporary classroom.
A WRD official admitted that the sewage channel had been blocked for construction work and assured that the water has since been drained from the campus. “We will take steps to prevent such incidents in the future,” the official said.
