New Delhi: In a controversial claim, former JNU students’ union vice-president Shehla Rashid, on Saturday allegedly held Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh(RSS) of hatching a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Taking to Twitter Shehla alleged,”Looks like RSS/Gadkari is planning to assassinate Modi, and then blame it upon Muslims/Communists and then lynch Muslims #RajivGandhiStyle.”

Reacting to her tweet Gadkari said that he would initiate legal action against anti-social elements for allegedly making absurd claims and trying to link him in the assassination threat to Modi.

“I would be taking legal action on anti-social elements who have made bizarre comments; attributing personal motives to me, regarding the assassination threat to PM @narendramodi,” tweeted Gadkari without directly referring to Shehla.

Hitting back, Shehla questioned Gadkari if he were also to initiate action against a media house for targeting JNU activist Umar Khalid.

“Leader of world’s biggest party gets worked up about a sarcastic tweet. Imagine what an innocent student @UmarKhalidJNU must be going through after a baseless media assault on him & his father,” she tweeted.

Shehla’s controversial tweets came post Pune police unraveled a plot, allegedly being hatched by Maoists to assassinate the Prime Minister in a Rajiv Gandhi type incident during one of his political road shows.

The plot came to light with the seizure of a letter addressed to a Maoist leader named Prakash and signed ‘R’. It is dated April 18, 2017. The rationale for alleged assassination plot in the letter is to ‘end Modi-raj’ because of the electoral victories of the BJP and its allies in Assembly elections.

Besides Shehla, Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam has alleged that whenever Modi’s popularity seems to dwindle, news of an assassination plot is unraveled.

“I am not saying this is completely untrue but it has been PM Modi’s old tactic, since he was Chief Minister. Whenever his popularity declines, news of an assassination plot is planted,” Nirupam alleged.
