Mumbai Police have registered an attempt to murder case after unidentified assailants opened fire outside the residence of filmmaker Rohit Shetty in Juhu in the early hours of Sunday. Police said the Lawrence Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility for the shooting, prompting heightened security and a multi-agency probe.
Firing reported past midnight
According to the FIR accessed by India Today TV, the incident occurred around 12.45 am when a gunman fired multiple rounds towards Shetty’s residential building. The complaint was lodged by Shetty’s bodyguard, Swapnil Salunkhe (31), who was on duty at the time.
Salunkhe told police he was monitoring CCTV footage in the lobby when he heard a sound resembling a firecracker. On checking the feed, he allegedly saw an unidentified man in a black jacket and white trousers near the compound wall along Road No. 10, firing towards the building with what appeared to be a pistol.
Assailant fled after firing five rounds
Police said the shooter fired five rounds before fleeing towards Pushpa Park. Two other security personnel rushed outside but failed to apprehend the assailant. Another police bodyguard assigned to Shetty alerted local police, who reached the spot shortly thereafter.
The FIR states the firing was carried out with the intention to kill the filmmaker Rohit Shetty.
Four arrested, one accused identified
The Anti-Extortion Cell of the Mumbai Police arrested four persons from Pune on Monday evening for allegedly assisting the shooter and arranging a two-wheeler used in the crime. Police identified one wanted accused as Shubham Lonkar, believed to be linked to the Bishnoi gang. The shooter remains at large.
Probe and security intensified
Investigators are analysing CCTV footage from the area and tracing the escape route used by the accused. Security around Shetty’s residence has been tightened as the investigation continues.
