Chandigarh: Punjab Police has registered an FIR against Sikh preacher Ranjit Singh Dhadrianwale in connection with a 2012 rape and murder case. The action follows a complaint filed by the victim’s brother and an affidavit submitted by Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav to the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The FIR, lodged on December 7 at Passiana Police Station in Patiala, invokes sections 302 (murder), 376 (rape), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. The case stems from the death of a woman found unconscious near the gate of Dhadrianwale’s dera, Parmeshwar Dwar, in April 2012. She later died in a hospital due to poisoning by aluminum phosphate insecticide, as per the postmortem report.

The victim’s family initially raised no suspicion, but her sister filed complaints alleging foul play. Despite this, no action was taken until now. The High Court directed the police to investigate the matter following the brother’s petition. The DGP’s affidavit noted procedural lapses, including the destruction of relevant records in 2020 and show-cause notices issued to officials involved in the original inquiry.

Dhadrianwale, a prominent Sikh preacher with a global following, stated in a video message that he would cooperate with the investigation and expressed faith in the judiciary and Punjab Police.

The case remains under investigation, with fresh allegations of threats made against the victim’s brother in recent years adding complexity to the matter.
