Mumbai: Six female students were booked after they staged a protest against the enforcement of a burqa-niqab ban at an educational institution in Mumbai’s Goregaon area. The incident occurred outside Vivek Vidyalaya and Junior College, where the students gathered in opposition to the newly implemented dress code that disallows burqas and niqabs inside classrooms.

Students protest dress code change

According to police officials, the management of the institution recently introduced a dress code prohibiting students from wearing burqas and niqabs in the classroom. The move triggered strong reactions from a section of the student community, leading to a hunger strike outside the campus on Wednesday.

The protesting students claimed that the rule violated their personal freedom and religious expression. They reportedly sat outside the institution’s entrance, refusing food and demanding that the administration withdraw the ban. Videos circulating on social media showed the students holding placards and raising slogans, drawing attention to the dispute.

Police intervene and book students

A police official stated that the students had assembled without prior permission. When police personnel arrived and instructed them to disperse, the students allegedly argued and continued the protest.

“They were protesting without police permission. They also argued with police personnel who asked them to wind up the stir. We have booked six female students, three of whom are unidentified, for unlawful assembly,” the official said.

The case has been registered under sections related to unlawful gathering and violation of public order protocols. No arrests have been made so far, and the investigation is ongoing.

Viral video sparks online debate

A video of the students’ protest went viral throughout the day, triggering debate across social media platforms. Many users questioned the timing and nature of the institution’s dress code change, while others defended the rule as a measure to maintain uniformity and discipline in classrooms.

The college management has not issued an official statement yet but is expected to clarify its position following the controversy.

Conclusion

The incident has brought renewed attention to issues of dress codes, institutional autonomy and students’ rights. Authorities are currently examining the case, and further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing inquiry.
