A six-year-old girl lost her life after a speeding car rammed into the e-rickshaw she was travelling in with her grandmother in West Delhi’s Janakpuri area, police said.

Grandmother recalls terrifying moments

The incident occurred around 7.40 am near the Janakpuri Fire Station. According to police, the impact of the collision caused the e-rickshaw to overturn, throwing both the child and her 57-year-old grandmother, Mercy Xavier, onto the road.

Recounting the horrifying moments to PTI, Mercy said they were on their way to the child’s school when a fast-moving car struck their vehicle with tremendous force. She said she regained consciousness to find her granddaughter lying beside her, bleeding and gasping for breath.

Mercy alleged that despite her desperate pleas for help, bystanders initially did not step forward. The child was later rushed to the Mata Chanan Devi Hospital and subsequently shifted to a facility in Dwarka. She succumbed to her injuries during treatment.

Mother alleges delay in assistance

The girl’s mother, who works at a hospital, said a staff member informed her about the accident. She claimed witnesses told her that her elderly mother had been crying for help while the child struggled to breathe, but immediate assistance was not forthcoming. Eventually, a nurse helped transport the child to the hospital.

Driver arrested, probe under way

Police said a case has been registered at the Janakpuri Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rash and negligent driving causing death.

The vehicle involved has been seized. The accused driver, identified as Sanjeev, was arrested on Wednesday. The Delhi Police said statements of witnesses are being recorded and CCTV footage from cameras installed near the fire station and surrounding areas is being examined to reconstruct the sequence of events.

The tragic incident has sparked fresh concerns over road safety and bystander response in emergency situations.
