Greater Noida: A six-year-old boy tragically lost his life after drowning in a 15-foot-deep pit filled with rainwater in the Kaladhan Colony area of Greater Noida, triggering fresh allegations of negligence against the Greater Noida Authority.
The victim, identified as Avyaan Surya, reportedly fell into the open pit while playing with other children in the neighbourhood.
Boy declared dead at hospital
According to reports, the pit had been dug for boring work by the Greater Noida Authority. Residents alleged that the excavation site had been left without barricades or warning signs, posing a serious safety hazard.
People nearby rushed to rescue the child and immediately took him to a hospital. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police register case
Police have registered a case following a complaint lodged by the boy’s family.
“Based on the complaint of the plaintiff, a case has been registered in the matter. Further legal action is being ensured,” a police official said.
Authorities have launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances that led to the incident.
Residents allege negligence
The tragedy has reignited concerns over public safety and accountability. Residents have accused the Greater Noida Authority of failing to secure the excavation site, alleging that the absence of safety measures contributed to the child’s death.
The incident also brought back memories of a similar tragedy earlier this year, when a software engineer died after his car plunged into a water-filled ditch in Sector 150 during dense fog. That incident had sparked widespread criticism over alleged lapses in civic safety.
The latest tragedy has once again highlighted the need for authorities to ensure proper barricading and warning signs at construction and excavation sites to prevent such fatal accidents.
