A tragic hit-and-run accident in the early hours of Friday claimed the lives of 12 sheep and two dogs on Vilankurichi Road in Coimbatore city. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. near Kalaivani Nagar.

The vehicle, reportedly speeding, rammed into a flock of sheep, injuring 10 more sheep and their caretaker. The driver fled the scene without stopping. A special team from the city’s traffic investigation wing has been deployed to trace the vehicle and its driver.

The sheep were owned by P. Subramaniam, 47, a resident of Pappampatti, who manages a flock of around 500 animals. On the night of the accident, Ravi, 60, from Neikkarapatti near Palani in Dindigul district, along with four others, was herding the sheep to Athipalayam for grazing.

Upon receiving alerts from passing motorists, police arrived quickly. Ravi, who sustained injuries, was admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. The wounded sheep were shifted to a nearby veterinary facility for treatment. The carcasses of the animals that died were returned to Subramaniam.

Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and seeking witnesses to identify the vehicle involved in the incident.
