A college student lost her life in a tragic road accident in the Panbazar area of the city late Monday night after the car she was travelling in rammed into a road divider near the Gauhati High Court. Police said the vehicle was being driven at high speed and under the influence of alcohol.

The deceased has been identified as Niha Das, a third-semester student of Radha Govinda Baruah College and a resident of Fatasil Ambari. She died on the spot due to severe injuries sustained in the crash.

Drunk driving led to loss of control

According to traffic police from Panbazar Police Station, the car was travelling from the Bharalumukh side when the driver lost control at high speed and crashed into the road divider. The impact was severe, leaving little chance of survival for Niha, who was seated on the rear left side of the vehicle.

Traffic Inspector Dwijendra Medhi said the driver, identified as Kayam Saiyed, was driving under the influence of alcohol. “The accused has been arrested and produced before a local court on Tuesday as per legal procedure,” he said.

Friends in the car, one injured

Niha was travelling with four friends — Akshat Jalan, Omar Sayyad, Parveen Saini and Kayam Saiyed. Akshat Jalan sustained injuries in the accident and was rushed to a private hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.

Vehicle seized, probe continues

Police said the vehicle, a cab registered in Kamrup Metropolitan district, has been seized for inspection. The owner, Akash Mandal, was questioned and claimed the car belonged to his brother and was taken by the accused without permission.

Investigations are ongoing to determine further liability. The incident has once again highlighted the deadly consequences of drunk driving and reckless speeding, especially during late-night hours.
