Thiruvananthapuram: Fire brand IPS officer Ajeetha Begum took over as Kollam police chief from her husband Satheesh Bino last week. For the IPS fraternity this change of guard at the Kollam city police commissionerate is unique for the fact that the city police chief Satheesh Bino handed over the charge to his wife Ajeetha Begum as his successor.
Prior to this change of guard too, the Sateesh-Ajeetha combination had been wielding their official power in the city and rural revenue districts of Kollam for a few months last year. While Satheesh held charge as Kollam city police commissioner in June 2016, Ajeetha was the rural superintendent of police in the same district. Later Ajeetha was on a maternity leave.
Ajeetha, popular for her sagacity and courage in the discourse of her duties got back to work on June 8. Soon after she occupied the Kollam police commissioner’s chair as Sateesh had been transferred as superintendent of police of the neighbouring district Pathanamthitta.
After assuming charge she enlisted her agenda with media persons. Her top top priorities include effectively dealing with the women and children issues, putting a brake on road accidents in Kollam city and spelling the nemesis of the growing drug menace here. One of her missions follows the campaign Sateesh started as the commissioner, “Safe Kollam”, to end the drug menace. Lauding her husband for this initiative, Ajeetha vowed to take further the campaign.
The star IPS couple is from the 2008 batch. While Ajeetha hails from Coimbatore, Satheesh is from Kanyakumari district. They were serving in the Jammu & Kashmir and Madhya Pradesh cadres initially and their nuptial knot in 2011 brought the couple to the Kerala cadre a year later. They are parents to a son and a daughter.
