The saying goes, “Marriages are made in heaven,” but in India, where arranged marriages dominate, the journey feels more like a trial by fire—especially for women and their families.

Sthal: A Match, a hard-hitting Marathi film released in 2023, sheds light on this harsh reality. Set in rural Maharashtra, it follows Savita, a young woman balancing ambition and societal expectations, as her father, a struggling cotton farmer, seeks a “suitable” husband for her.

The film, featuring first-time actors from the village where it was shot, stands out for its raw and unfiltered depiction of the arranged marriage process. Actress Nandini Chikte, who plays Savita, has already earned accolades for her powerful portrayal.

One recurring scene captures Savita’s humiliation—seated before strangers who scrutinize her appearance, background, and skills, only to reject her over trivial aspects like skin tone or height. The film also highlights dowry practices, showing families sacrificing land and savings to meet demands, sometimes with tragic consequences.

Inspired by director Jayant Digambar Somalkar’s own experiences, Sthal challenges the glorified portrayal of weddings in mainstream Indian cinema. Unlike lavish Bollywood spectacles, it exposes the grim reality for countless women forced into marriages against their will.

Somalkar hopes the film sparks crucial conversations, pushing society to rethink traditions that devalue women’s choices. Though change won’t happen overnight, Sthal is a step toward breaking the cycle.
