Chhattisgarh: Chhattisgarh police on Thursday arrested a 20-year-old student of the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Nava Raipur, for allegedly using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create morphed obscene images of 36 female students at the institute.

Incident comes to light

A police team was dispatched to IIIT Nava Raipur on Wednesday following preliminary inputs about the incident. The institute management initially informed the police that an internal inquiry was being conducted by a three-member women’s staff committee. Subsequently, the management filed a formal written complaint, prompting the registration of an FIR.

Accused and modus operandi

The accused, identified as Syed Rahim Adnan Ali, is a second-year student of the Electronics and Communication Engineering program. According to Vivek Shukla, Additional SP (Nava Raipur), the student used publicly available photos from social media platforms to generate AI-based pornographic images of 36 female classmates.

Police recovered the obscene images stored on the accused’s laptop and mobile phone during the investigation.

Legal provisions invoked

A case has been registered under Section 66B of the Information Technology Act, which deals with dishonestly receiving stolen computer resources, and Section 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (Breach of Peace and Intentional Insults). The accused is currently in police custody while the formal investigation is ongoing.

AI misuse in educational institutes

This incident highlights the growing concern around AI-based harassment and misuse of technology in educational settings. Experts have repeatedly stressed the need for awareness and stricter safeguards to prevent such cases, particularly in college campuses where students actively share images online.

Institutes are now being urged to implement AI ethics guidelines, monitor social media misuse, and conduct workshops to educate students on responsible technology use.

Conclusion

The arrest underscores the legal consequences of AI misuse and the responsibility of educational institutions to ensure safe environments for students. Police investigations are ongoing, and authorities are reviewing whether there were any accomplices or further digital evidence linked to the crime.
