Delhi Police confirmed that a female student was allegedly assaulted at South Asian University (SAU) on Wednesday, after a video of the canteen attack surfaced online. The incident is being attributed to members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
According to authorities, the dispute originated in the university’s canteen, where two student groups argued over food preferences. The altercation escalated into physical violence. The injured student contacted the police via a PCR call, following which an inquiry was launched, and a medical evaluation of the victim was initiated.
The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) strongly condemned the attack, accusing ABVP members of imposing restrictions on serving non-vegetarian food at the canteen. They alleged that women were manhandled and staff serving non-veg dishes were assaulted. SFI denounced the violence, stating that university spaces should uphold democratic and inclusive values.
In response, ABVP argued that nearly 110 students were observing a fast and had requested satvik food. The administration accommodated their request by designating one canteen for fasting students. ABVP accused SFI of instigating conflict by forcefully introducing non-veg food in the space allocated for those fasting.
Both groups have called for strict intervention by the university to prevent further hostilities. Authorities continue to investigate the incident to establish accountability.
