Faridabad: A 16-year-old Class XI student allegedly died by suicide after falling from the third-floor terrace of a private school in Faridabad’s NIT area, with her family alleging that prolonged punishment at the institution left her distressed and humiliated.
The incident occurred between 1 pm and 1.30 pm on Tuesday, shortly before classes ended. The girl was rushed to a nearby healthcare facility and later taken to the district civil hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Family says student was punished for hours
The girl’s parents have alleged that she was made to stand outside her classroom for nearly four hours as punishment following a dispute involving some students.
Her father said his daughter was academically strong and had appeared normal when she left home for school that morning. He alleged that being singled out and made to stand outside the classroom for such a long period caused her considerable emotional distress.
The family has also questioned why they were allegedly informed only after some delay. However, police said the parents had not yet submitted a formal complaint making allegations against the school.
School denies prolonged punishment claim
The school has strongly rejected the family’s allegations. According to police, the principal told investigators that the student had sought permission to use the washroom and was accompanied by a female staff member.
The school has claimed that the girl subsequently moved towards the terrace and jumped before anyone could stop her. The management has said it is cooperating with the investigation.
Police are examining CCTV footage from corridors and other parts of the school to establish the student’s movements and determine what happened in the hours before her death.
Investigators are also expected to examine whether the student was subjected to the alleged punishment and whether disciplinary action played any role in the events.
The parents have sought a post-mortem examination. Police said further action will depend on the investigation, medical findings and any formal complaint.
