A tragic accident on a college campus in Maharashtra has claimed the life of a 20-year-old marine engineering student after a basketball pole collapsed on him during a morning workout.

The victim, Vishal Verma, a second-year BTech student, was exercising at a basketball court in Maval taluka around 7.30 am when the incident occurred.

Sudden collapse during routine exercise

According to police, Verma had completed his morning jog and briefly stopped at the court, where he attempted pull-ups by holding onto the basketball rim. The structure reportedly failed to withstand the load, causing the ring to snap and the entire metal pole to collapse.

The falling structure struck him on the head, resulting in a severe injury. Fellow students and college authorities rushed him to Talegaon General Hospital, but he succumbed during treatment.

Investigation into possible negligence

Police have registered a case of accidental death and launched an investigation into the incident. Officials are recording statements from college staff and students to determine whether there was any negligence in maintaining the sports infrastructure.

Authorities said the structure’s failure raises concerns about safety standards and routine inspections of equipment on campus.

Institution calls it a tragic loss

The institute administration expressed grief over the incident, calling it a deeply unfortunate loss. Officials confirmed that Verma was a hostel resident and had enrolled in the marine engineering programme in 2024.

The college has stated that it is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.

Recurring safety concerns

The incident has once again highlighted risks associated with poorly maintained sports facilities. Similar accidents reported in recent months, including fatal cases involving collapsing basketball poles in Haryana, had already triggered calls for stricter safety audits.

Experts emphasise that regular inspection and timely replacement of ageing or corroded equipment are critical to preventing such avoidable tragedies.

As investigations continue, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety compliance in educational institutions to protect students during routine activities.
