PUNE – Students from Savitribai Phule Pune University’s boys’ hostels, along with representatives of student organizations and the food quality control committee, met the university registrar on Friday to renew their demand for a centralised kitchen to improve meal standards in the hostel mess.
The protest erupted after students discovered cockroaches and worms in their food on Thursday night, prompting them to shut down the mess. They accused the current contractor of negligence and urged the administration to take immediate action.
University officials confirmed that a proposal for a centralised kitchen had already been submitted to the state government. Meanwhile, students have been advised to eat at the refectory or food malls.
BSc student Shivprasad Palve, who found a cockroach in his soybean curry, called the situation unacceptable. “A reputed institution like SPPU should at least provide hygienic food,” he said. Other students alleged that the contractor’s tenure was being repeatedly renewed without genuine oversight.
ABVP member Shiva Barole highlighted financial concerns, questioning why the contractor, who benefits from free infrastructure and utilities, still fails to ensure quality meals. The contractor’s family, however, dismissed the claims, insisting this was an isolated incident.
