New Delhi: The Supreme Court has cancelled the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, one of the accused in the murder case of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, and directed her to surrender before the trial court within three weeks.
The apex court, however, observed that Sonam would be at liberty to seek bail again if there is no significant progress in the trial after six months.
Meghalaya government challenged bail
The order came after the Meghalaya government challenged the earlier decision granting bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi.
During the hearing, the state argued that the bail order should be set aside considering the seriousness of the allegations and the stage of the criminal proceedings.
Defence cites compliance with bail conditions
Appearing for Sonam, her counsel submitted that she had complied with all the conditions imposed while granting bail and had not violated any court directions.
The defence also argued that there was no risk of her absconding or influencing the investigation.
After hearing both sides, the Supreme Court cancelled the bail and directed Sonam to surrender within three weeks.
Fresh bail plea allowed after six months
While setting aside the bail order, the court clarified that Sonam could approach the Supreme Court again for bail if the trial is unduly delayed and does not make substantial progress within the next six months.
The murder case involving Raja Raghuvanshi continues to be under trial, and further proceedings will now continue before the competent court.
