With temperatures hitting a scorching 41.5°C in Karwar and across Uttara Kannada, SSLC students are facing severe discomfort during their exams. Several rural exam centers lack basic amenities like fans or coolers, making it difficult for students to concentrate in the extreme heat. According to the meteorological department, this is the first time in over 60 years that many parts of the district have experienced temperatures surpassing 40°C, intensifying the already stressful exam period.
In many rural areas, students must travel 25-30 km to reach their exam centers, only to face sweltering conditions once they arrive. Many of these centers lack essential cooling systems, with schools that have RCC roofs feeling like ovens, while those with Mangalore tile roofs offer little respite from the heat.
Parents are increasingly concerned about their children’s well-being, urging the authorities to station medical staff at the exam centers due to the risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses. One teacher expressed worry that this year’s extreme weather could affect student performance. Despite Uttara Kannada’s consistent ranking among the top four districts for SSLC results, the teacher fears that this year’s performance might dip due to the harsh conditions.
Although exams are typically scheduled for the first or second week of April, this year’s exams were brought forward, yet the high temperatures have remained a significant challenge for students.
