In a significant engagement, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Friday to discuss pressing issues affecting the state. The meeting, lasting approximately 40 minutes, was described by CM Stalin as productive, during which he submitted a detailed memorandum outlining three key requests to the Prime Minister.

Among the foremost issues addressed was the need for the release of funds under the Samagara Siksha Scheme, a vital initiative aimed at enhancing the quality of education in the state. CM Stalin emphasised the Tamil Nadu government’s commitment to implementing progressive educational policies, including innovative programmes like free breakfast for students. However, he pointed out that while the state has embraced aspects of the National Education Policy (NEP), it remains opposed to the three-language policy, citing concerns over language imposition.

Stalin also highlighted the importance of expediting approval for the Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase-II. He noted that, similar to the collaboration seen in the first phase of the project, the second phase should also proceed with a 50:50 equity sharing model between the Union and State governments. He referred to previous assurances from Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman regarding funding for this project, stressing that significant progress has already been made with over ₹18,564 crore spent on the initial works. The lack of pending approvals, however, has hindered further development.

In addition to education and infrastructure, CM Stalin urged PM Modi to focus on securing the traditional fishing rights of Indian fishermen. He called for a permanent solution to ensure the protection of these rights and requested the swift release of apprehended fishermen and their crafts. This issue holds particular importance for Tamil Nadu, where fishing communities play a crucial role in the local economy and culture.

After the meeting, CM Stalin expressed satisfaction with the discussions, stating, “It was a pleasure to meet with PM Modi. PM Modi also expressed happiness to us. All in PM Modi’s hands only to make this happy meet as useful meet also.” He reiterated the importance of the requests made, particularly regarding the Chennai Metro Rail Project and the educational funding, indicating that timely action on these fronts could greatly benefit the state.

He further explained that while Tamil Nadu is open to implementing beneficial aspects of the NEP, there are reservations regarding certain policies, particularly those related to language. “Even though NEP assured there wouldn’t be language imposition on any states, it was not clear on the MoU. So we have been saying to make changes in MoU,” he stated.

The meeting between CM MK Stalin and PM Narendra Modi marks a critical moment for Tamil Nadu as it seeks to address long-standing issues and secure necessary funding for key projects. The outcome of this dialogue could have significant implications for the state’s educational landscape and infrastructure development. As the state government continues to push for its requests, the response from the Union government will be closely watched by both political observers and citizens alike.
