Chennai : The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued an orange alert for numerous districts in Tamil Nadu, predicting significant rainfall until October 18. The forecast anticipates a total of 204 mm of rain across the state during this period.
In response to the anticipated downpours, the Tamil Nadu Disaster Management Authority has mobilised resources, placing 65,000 volunteers on standby for rescue and relief operations. These volunteers will work alongside state government agencies to address any emergencies that may arise. Notably, the Greater Chennai Corporation has prepared 10,000 volunteers specifically for service in Chennai.
The RMC has warned of heavy showers in several districts, including Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar, Pudukottai, Sivaganga, Madurai, and Ramanathapuram, starting Sunday. As the situation unfolds, heavy to very heavy rain is expected to hit the Delta districts beginning Monday, October 14. Furthermore, northern districts, particularly Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Cuddalore, are also likely to experience intense rainfall.
The RMC reported that a low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea is developing into a cyclonic storm, contributing to the moisture influx into Tamil Nadu. This situation is compounded by two active weather systems located in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, further enhancing the potential for widespread rainfall.
The Tamil Nadu disaster management team is on high alert, with monitoring units prepared to track potential power outages and other electricity-related issues. The RMC has indicated that heavy to very heavy rain is expected to affect most areas in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal until October 16. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) anticipates that the northeast monsoon may begin around October 17, adding to the rainfall intensity.
In preparation for the severe weather conditions, a high-level meeting was convened last week, presided over by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin. The meeting focused on immediate measures, including the logistics of rescue operations in anticipation of heavy rains.
As Tamil Nadu braces for substantial rainfall and potential disruptions, government agencies and volunteers are working diligently to ensure the safety and well-being of residents. The situation remains fluid, and authorities are urging citizens to stay informed and prepared for any eventualities.
