In a significant operation, the Tamil Nadu Police, supported by animal welfare volunteers, dismantled an interstate cattle smuggling racket on Sunday. The bust occurred in Chengalpattu, where authorities rescued 57 animals from dire conditions.
The operation was initiated following a complaint from animal welfare activist Sai Vignesh, who alerted the police about the smuggling. Officers intercepted a truck suspected of transporting cattle under inhumane conditions. Upon inspection, the police discovered that the animals were confined in cramped spaces, bound tightly, and subjected to severe cruelty. Chilli powder was reportedly used to irritate their eyes, preventing them from sleeping.
An FIR was filed against the truck driver and the cattle owner under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for animal cruelty, along with charges under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The legal proceedings aim to address the inhumane treatment of the animals and hold the perpetrators accountable.
The rescued animals were transported to the Almighty Animal Care Trust sanctuary in Thiruvallur for urgent care and treatment. The sanctuary will provide the necessary medical attention and rehabilitation for the animals, ensuring their well-being and recovery from the traumatic experience.
The police are continuing their investigation into the smuggling ring, aiming to identify other individuals involved and prevent future incidents. The collaboration between law enforcement and animal welfare groups highlights the commitment to combating animal cruelty and upholding ethical treatment standards.
The operation has drawn significant public attention and support, with many expressing outrage over the cruelty the animals endured. The involvement of animal welfare activists has been crucial in bringing these issues to light and ensuring that justice is served.
This case underscores the ongoing issue of animal cruelty in smuggling operations and the need for stringent enforcement of animal protection laws. The Tamil Nadu Police’s swift action demonstrates a strong stand against such crimes, reinforcing the importance of vigilance and community involvement in safeguarding animal rights.
