Tamil Nadu rocked by brutal assaults on elderly women; two shocking rape cases
Two horrific incidents in Tamil Nadu — one in Panruti (Cuddalore district) and another in Ranipet — have sparked widespread outrage and horror over the brutal targeting of elderly women.
In the latest case, 80-year-old Kausalya from Thirasu village near Panruti was reportedly raped by four drunken men while she was walking along Pulavanur Road on June 16. The attackers, aged between 35 and 40, are accused of forcibly dragging her into nearby bushes, silencing her by stuffing soil in her mouth, and committing the heinous act. They also snatched her gold jewellery before fleeing.
Passersby, hearing her cries, rushed to her aid and took her to the Cuddalore Government Medical College Hospital, where she remains in critical condition. A case has been registered by the Panruti Police, who have deployed sniffer dogs and forensic teams to trace the culprits, who are currently absconding.
This incident comes barely a week after another appalling crime in Arcot taluk of Ranipet district, where 19-year-old S Nandakumar allegedly raped and murdered an 80-year-old woman. The youth, familiar with the area through his work as an electrician, reportedly entered the woman’s house on June 3 in an intoxicated state and committed the assault. Police tracked him using CCTV footage and arrested him near a hillock the next day.
Both cases have left communities shaken and questioning the state of safety for women, especially the elderly, in rural Tamil Nadu.
