In a deeply moving incident, a Class 12 student from Valliyur, Tamil Nadu, sat for his board exam just hours after his mother’s sudden demise.

Sunil Kumar, from Tirunelveli district, lost his mother, Subalakshmi, to a heart ailment on March 3—the very day his public examinations began. Having lost his father, Krishnamoorthy, six years ago, Sunil and his sister, Yasini, were solely raised by their mother.

Despite his grief, relatives and neighbors urged him to take the exam, recalling Subalakshmi’s unwavering dedication to her children’s education. Before leaving, Sunil placed his hall ticket at his mother’s feet, overcome with emotion. His family comforted him, ensuring he was not alone as he arrived at the exam center.

Tamil Nadu Education Minister Anbil Mahesh’s team extended their support, with representatives assuring him that the government would stand by him. Chief Minister MK Stalin also acknowledged Sunil’s perseverance, posting on X, “This is the Tamil community! Education is more important than our lives!”

The Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Certificate Examinations are underway from March 3 to 25, with over 8 lakh students participating.
