A 15-year-old girl climbed onto a water tank in Mahadev Jharkhandi Colony after allegedly becoming upset when her mother scolded her for talking to a boy on the phone, triggering a three-hour rescue operation, police said on Monday.
The teenager, a resident of Awas Vikas Shivpur, climbed the tank at around 1.30 pm on Sunday and sat on top of it. Concerned residents alerted the AIIMS police station after fearing that she might take an extreme step.
Police spend three hours bringing girl down
Despite repeated appeals from police and residents, the girl initially refused to descend. A crowd gathered as officers continued attempts to communicate with her and persuade her to come down safely.
As a precaution, mattresses were placed beneath the tank in case she fell.
After nearly three hours of counselling and negotiations, Sub-Inspector Jagruti Kharwar climbed onto the tank and continued speaking to the teenager.
Police said the officer gained the girl’s confidence by assuring her that her concerns would be heard and that her family would receive counselling.
When the teenager moved close enough, Kharwar held her hand and, with assistance from colleagues below, brought her down safely.

Superintendent of Police (City) Nimish Patil said the girl later told police that she had been scolded by her mother for speaking to a boy over the phone.
Upset by the incident, she climbed the water tank in anger, police said.
The teenager was subsequently taken to AIIMS Gorakhpur for medical examination and counselling. Following treatment, she was handed over to her family and returned home later in the evening.
The incident highlights the importance of calm communication and timely intervention when young people experience intense emotional distress.
