KRISHNANAGAR (NADIA): A 19-year-old girl was allegedly shot dead by her boyfriend at her residence in Krishnanagar town on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred between 2:00 pm and 2:30 pm when the accused, identified as Debraj Singha, reportedly opened fire at point-blank range after the victim expressed her desire to end the relationship.

Victim declared dead at hospital

The deceased, identified as Isha Mallik, suffered two gunshot wounds, including one to her head. She was rushed to Shaktinagar District Hospital in a critical condition but was declared brought dead by doctors. The post-mortem examination has been ordered to ascertain further details.

Police launch manhunt for accused

Krishnanagar Police District Superintendent K Amarnath stated that the accused, who stays near Bidhan Chandra Krishi Vishwavidyalaya in Nadia’s Mohanpur, was known to the victim’s family through her brother. A manhunt has been launched to trace him, and police teams are searching possible hideouts.

Crime witnessed by victim’s family

The murder took place at the victim’s home in Manikpara, opposite Krishnagar Women’s College, under Kotwali police station limits. Isha’s mother and younger brother were at home when the shooting occurred. Her mother reported hearing a loud noise and seeing a young man flee with a firearm, only to find her daughter lying in a pool of blood.

Relationship turned deadly

According to police sources, the couple had been in a relationship since the victim’s school days. She had left school in 2023 and had reportedly expressed a desire to end the relationship, which is believed to have triggered the violent attack.

Investigation underway

The accused is absconding, and police are intensifying efforts to locate him. Authorities are also questioning local contacts and verifying whether the firearm was licensed. Further investigation will determine whether there were prior threats or disputes leading up to the incident.
