Tensions Rise in Aligarh as Hindus Allegedly Throw Colors at Mosque holi
March 14, 2025, saw tensions rise in Uttar Pradesh, particularly in Aligarh, as a group of Hindus reportedly threw colors at a mosque while celebrating Holi, coinciding with Jumma prayers. Despite a visible police presence in the area, the incident sparked outrage on social media, with videos of the event quickly going viral.
The mosque in Abdul Karim Chowk had been covered with a tarpaulin to protect the structure from being splashed with colors, but the group celebrating Holi reportedly ignored the security measures and threw both colors and water at the tarpaulin. There were also claims that anti-Muslim slogans were shouted during the celebration, though the authenticity of these claims and the videos could not be independently verified.
Congress leader Surendra Rajput condemned the incident, expressing concern over what he described as a “mockery” of Sanatan Dharma, the foundation of Hindu traditions, due to the location of the Holi celebration.
Islamic scholar Samiullah Khan also shared the video on social media, accusing the group of deliberately celebrating Holi near the mosque with inflammatory slogans, questioning why such celebrations needed to take place at religious sites when temples like the Ram Mandir were available for the same purpose.
Despite the tense atmosphere, Muslims were able to offer Friday prayers at the Aligarh Jama Masjid in Uparkot, albeit under heavy security. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation as the state remains on edge during the ongoing festive season.
