Tesla has officially entered the Indian market with the launch of its Model Y SUV, priced from ₹60 lakh. The rear-wheel drive base variant will be available via full cash purchase, while the long-range version is priced at ₹68 lakh.
These prices are significantly higher than in global markets—$44,990 in the U.S., 263,500 yuan in China, and €45,970 in Germany—primarily due to India’s steep import duties and logistics costs. The vehicles will be imported as completely built units (CBUs), further adding to the price.
The American EV giant has selected Mumbai’s upscale Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) as the location for its first Indian experience centre, marking the brand’s physical presence in the country.
India is among the latest to join the EV transition, but growing demand, policy incentives, and infrastructure development are drawing global players like Tesla.
The Model Y units will be shipped from Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai, which handles exports across Asia and Europe. So far, six Model Y vehicles have landed in India for testing and display purposes.
Tesla has already imported goods worth nearly $1 million, including Supercharger hardware and car accessories, sourced from its facilities in China and the U.S., in preparation for this launch.
Given the lack of local manufacturing, the fully imported Model Y will remain one of the priciest Teslas globally for Indian consumers.
