Tesla has officially taken its first step into the Indian market by securing a five-year lease for a showroom in Mumbai, as per Reuters. The store will be housed in the Maker Maxity complex, a prime commercial and retail space in Bandra Kurla Complex, close to the city’s airport.

The lease agreement commenced on February 16, 2025, with Tesla committing to an annual rent of approximately $446,000 for a 4,003-square-foot (372-square-meter) space—comparable to a basketball court.

Tesla’s entry into India has been years in the making. Initially eyeing the market in 2022, the EV giant postponed its plans due to policy roadblocks, steep import duties, and inadequate EV infrastructure. However, after navigating these challenges, Tesla reignited its India expansion strategy last year.

With one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive markets, India presents a lucrative opportunity for Tesla as it establishes a retail presence and tests demand for its premium electric vehicles.
