Thomas Berly, a pioneering actor and filmmaker from South India, passed away on Monday at the age of 92. Berly, who hails from Fort Kochi, was one of the first South Indian actors to make a mark in Hollywood in the 1950s. His acting career began in Malayalam cinema with the 1953 film Thiramala, but he later moved to Hollywood, featuring in films like Never So Few and numerous TV series. His notable roles often included playing a Mexican cowboy.

Aside from acting, Berly was an accomplished director and producer. He directed several successful films, including the 1973 Malayalam film Ithu Manushyano, which became famous for its song “Sukhamoru Bindu Dukhamoru Bindu”. Another key film he directed was Vellarikkaappattanam (1983), starring Prem Nazir and Sukumari. Berly’s contributions to the Malayalam film industry also extended to writing; he published several books, such as Beyond Heart (2000), Fragrant Petals (2004), and O Kerala (2007).

Berly’s career spanned multiple decades, and his work in both the Indian and Hollywood film industries has left an indelible mark on cinema. His passing marks the end of an era for fans and colleagues alike, who will remember his contributions to the arts.
