Three women from Arunachal Pradesh have alleged that they were subjected to racial slurs, humiliation and intimidation by their neighbours in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar following a dispute over repair work at their rented flat.
Police said an FIR has been registered at the Malviya Nagar police station against Harsh Singh and his wife Ruby Jain under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Dispute over repair work escalates
The incident reportedly occurred on February 20 when the women called an electrician to their fourth-floor flat around 3.30 pm to install an air conditioner. Dust and debris from drilling allegedly fell to the floor below, leading to objections from neighbours.
The women alleged that the disagreement escalated into verbal abuse, with racial and derogatory remarks targeting the northeastern community. A purported video of the confrontation has since circulated on social media.
In the video, the accused are allegedly heard using insulting terms. One of the women is heard confronting them, denying allegations made against her character.
FIR registered, no arrests yet
According to police, the case has been registered under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provisions related to insulting a woman’s modesty, criminal intimidation and promoting enmity on grounds of race and place of birth.
A senior officer said no physical injuries were reported, but the complainants have alleged mental harassment and humiliation. No arrests have been made so far.
The women have demanded a formal apology, stating that the remarks were directed at the dignity of the northeastern community. Legal representatives of both sides have presented differing accounts, and further investigation is under way.
