In a dramatic turn of events, Tamil Nadu’s ADGP HM Jayaram was taken into custody after the Madras High Court issued directives in a kidnapping investigation. His official vehicle was allegedly used to transport the abducted youth, raising serious concerns about police involvement.
Court Orders Clamp Down on Power Abuse
The arrest was part of a larger investigation tied to KV Kuppam MLA “Poovai” Jagan Moorthy, who was also instructed to cooperate with authorities. The case stems from a complaint filed by a woman named Lakshmi, whose 18-year-old son was abducted in retaliation for her elder son’s unauthorised marriage.
According to Lakshmi, her older son married a girl without her family’s consent and went into hiding. The girl’s relatives, unable to find him, allegedly kidnapped her younger son, who was later found injured and abandoned near a hotel. Shockingly, the vehicle used for the drop-off belonged to ADGP Jayaram.
Strong Court Rebuke
Justice P Velmurugan did not hold back, stating that public servants must be held accountable and that no one is above the law. He emphasized that political affiliations should not shield anyone from justice. In response to MLA Moorthy’s anticipatory bail plea, the judge condemned the misuse of power, likening his actions to a “third-class citizen” and accusing him of running “Kangaroo courts.”
The judge further criticized the MLA for interfering with police efforts, questioning when leaders would begin serving the public in good faith.
