After the 17-year-old boy drove the Porsche that collided with a bike on May 19, instantly killing two people, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said on Friday that the boy was acting in “full senses” at the time. In a press conference, the top police officer in Pune stated that an effort was made to demonstrate that the teenager, who happens to be the son of a well-known real estate developer, was not operating the Porsche and that the family driver was to blame.

“There was an attempt to show that the accused was not driving the vehicle and someone else was driving, but they couldn’t do that,” Amitesh Kumar said.

The police chief’s statement comes after the teen’s family claimed that their driver was behind the wheel when the accident happened on May 19 (Sunday). The family driver, in his first statement, also claimed that he was driving the Porsche when the accident happened.

“We will take action under Section 201 (destruction of evidence) against those persons who tried to show that the accused juvenile was not driving the car and some adult driver was behind the wheels,” the Pune police chief said.

The police chief said CCTV footage showed the vehicle was taken out by the accused from his residence. “On the basis of technical and CCTV evidence, it is confirmed that the car was being driven by the juvenile,” he said.

In addition, the Pune police chief announced that certain police officers had committed mistakes in filing the case, and that they would be held accountable for their actions following an internal investigation.

In addition, he said that special attorneys would be assigned to represent the police in court.

Awadhiya and his friend Ashwini Koshta, both young IT professionals, died in the accident that happened in the Kalyani Nagar area.

The opposition’s claims that the 17-year-old boy was fed “pizzas and burgers” while being held in custody after the incident were also rejected by the police commissioner.

“We have not seen and nothing has come to our notice regarding any preferential treatment being given at the police station. If any negligence happened by Yerwada police, action will be taken,” he further said.

Amid an outrage over the incident, a Pune court cancelled the bail granted to the teen and ordered him to be sent to a juvenile centre.
