Tourist in Delhi complains about beggars on streets
A foreign tourist’s recent visit to Delhi has sparked outrage after he shared a disturbing experience of being relentlessly pursued by barefoot children begging on the streets. Staying in Vasant Kunj for just three days, the man recounted how groups of young beggars, aged between 8 and 12, followed him wherever he went, even accompanying him inside stores and supermarkets.
In his post, which quickly went viral, the tourist expressed his frustration, explaining that the children wouldn’t leave him alone, constantly shadowing him on his walks. He noted that while giving them money only led to more begging, refusing to give anything made the situation even worse.
The man’s tale prompted widespread discussion, with many urging foreigners to treat Delhi as a mere transit stop, especially because of its reputation for scams and aggressive street begging. Others suggested alternative destinations across India, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, known for their better tourist experiences.
Begging rings involving children have long been a serious issue in India. In fact, cities like Indore have taken proactive steps to address this by instituting a ban on begging, with the aim of creating a cleaner and safer environment for both locals and tourists.
Despite Delhi’s iconic status as the national capital, incidents like these leave a lasting impression on visitors, shedding light on the darker side of the city.
