Kochi: A tourist from Tamil Nadu narrowly escaped tragedy after slipping into the waters at Thooval Waterfalls in Nedumkandam, Idukki district, on Saturday evening. Thanks to the swift actions of nearby residents, the man was rescued before the situation turned deadly.
A video capturing the tense rescue circulated widely on social media, showing locals throwing a rope and pulling the tourist to safety. The man was part of a four-member group from Madurai visiting Ramakkalmedu. While taking photos near the falls, he lost his footing and slipped.
Local body member Linimol Jose explained, “The tourist grabbed onto a rock just in time. Had he slipped further, he might have fallen into a deep trench, which would have been fatal.” Nearby residents and visitors immediately came to his aid and pulled him out of danger.
Due to the perilous terrain, locals remain vigilant at all times. One local youth keeps emergency ropes ready for such incidents, a preparedness that proved lifesaving on this occasion.
Visitors are not permitted in the specific area where the accident happened, but the scenic beauty of Thooval Waterfalls continues to attract many. Nedumkandam fire officials noted that nearly a dozen people have died at the site in the last ten years.
Panchayat vice-president Jayakumar D emphasized that while the waterfalls are stunning, tourists must admire them from safe distances. Plans are underway to install better fencing and enhance safety measures at the location.
