During the Chhath Puja festival in New Delhi, a thick layer of toxic foam covered the Yamuna River, as devotees waded into the polluted waters for the rituals. A viral video showed a woman washing her hair in the frothy, contaminated water, leaving viewers shocked and appalled. One social media user questioned, “Is this really happening?” while another sarcastically commented, “All that foam is not shampoo!”
Concerned onlookers highlighted the health hazards of coming into contact with the polluted water. A user pointed out the potential dangers to skin and hair, warning that, “in a few days, they might need to see a dermatologist.”
Earlier this week, the Delhi High Court denied permission for devotees to perform the rituals on the banks of the Yamuna, citing the river’s extreme pollution levels. The court expressed concern over the health risks posed by exposure to the water and noted that cleaning the river in time for the festival was not feasible. Justices Manmohan and Tushar Rao Gedela emphasized, “Understand, you will fall ill. We cannot allow you to enter the water. The pollution is severe, and cleaning Yamuna in a single day is impossible.”
The situation has sparked renewed debates about the worsening pollution in the river and the urgent need for a cleanup.
