In a heart-wrenching incident in Injambakkam, Chennai, a 30-year-old woman named Bharathi has been detained by police for allegedly killing one of her 43-day-old twin daughters by throwing her from a balcony. The tragic act is suspected to have stemmed from severe emotional distress, as the child had reportedly been unwell since birth.
Bharathi and her husband Arun (34), a private driver, live on the Selva Nagar main road along East Coast Road. According to relatives, Bharathi had just put the twins to sleep. Moments later, her screams alerted her mother-in-law and Arun’s brother-in-law, who rushed upstairs only to find one of the infants missing. Bharathi claimed she had stepped into the kitchen and found the baby gone upon her return.
A police team from Neelankarai was dispatched after a complaint was filed. During a search of the premises, the child’s body was found in a shopping bag in a nearby open field. The Royapettah Government Hospital is conducting a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death.
During questioning, Bharathi allegedly confessed to the crime, stating mental anguish and despair over the baby’s health drove her to act when no one was around. However, police officials said a final decision on filing murder charges would be based on the autopsy report.
The case is currently registered under suspicious death, and investigations involving family members are ongoing.
