IDUKKI: After a brief period of calm, Peermade taluk in Idukki has once again been rocked by two separate wild elephant attacks, resulting in the death of one woman and serious injuries to two others.
In the first incident, Seetha (42), a tribal woman from the Malampandaram community, was killed in the Murinjapuzha forest section while collecting forest produce near Thottapura with her husband and children on Friday.
The couple encountered a wild elephant near Meenmutti. As they attempted to flee, Seetha was trampled to death, while her husband Binu suffered serious injuries. Their children raised the alarm, and forest officials from the Murinjapuzha section rushed to the scene. Seetha and Binu were taken to Peermade Taluk Hospital, but Binu had to be shifted to Kanjirapally for advanced care.
Seetha’s body will be handed over to her family following post-mortem formalities.
In a separate incident, Anthony Swami (63), a worker from Sabarimala, sustained three fractured ribs when a wild elephant strayed into a coffee plantation owned by the Bathel Group in Vandiperiyar. He was attacked while on duty at the plantation.
These back-to-back incidents have reignited fears among residents about the rising frequency of human-wildlife conflicts in the region.
