Kolkata: In a heartbreaking incident on Tuesday morning, an 11-year-old boy, Ayush Paik, tragically lost his life after a fatal accident in Salt Lake. Ayush, along with his mother Noorjahan and cousin Afroza Khatun, was riding a scooter when they were thrown off after a racing bus collided with them. The incident occurred around 11 am on First Avenue, near the BA Block entrance to Salt Lake.
The scooter riders were attempting to navigate an uneven stretch of the road when Noorjahan swerved to avoid a concrete pit cover. As she did, the scooter brushed against one of two racing buses, throwing the riders onto the road. Ayush, who suffered severe head injuries, died later in the hospital despite efforts to save him. His mother and cousin sustained minor injuries.
The two bus drivers, Krishnendu Dutta and Amarnath Chowdhury, were arrested and charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, following a written complaint from the child’s father. If convicted, the drivers face a sentence ranging from five years to life imprisonment.
Witnesses to the incident and the family expressed their grief over the delayed treatment that could have saved Ayush’s life. Despite initial first aid, Ayush’s condition worsened, and he died after being transferred to multiple hospitals, including BC Roy Hospital and Divine Nursing Home. His family believes that timely medical intervention could have prevented the tragedy.
The incident sparked protests in the area, with local residents blocking roads in anger over the rash driving by bus drivers and the poor condition of Salt Lake’s roads. It took two hours for police to clear the road and calm the situation. The police have promised a crackdown on buses violating speed norms in the area and will initiate awareness campaigns about the importance of wearing helmets. The officer also remarked that Ayush’s chances of survival could have been higher if he had been wearing a helmet.
This incident highlights ongoing safety concerns on Kolkata’s roads, with calls for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and better medical responses in emergencies.
