In the fourth death related to construction site accidents in Tamil Nadu over the past 10 days, a 36-year-old man, V Karthikeyan, died after falling into a construction pit on Siruvani Main Road. The pit, part of the Coimbatore Ring Road Project by the state highways department, was left without adequate safety measures.
Details of the Incident:
- Date and Time: Early Sunday morning.
- Victim: V Karthikeyan, a zonal manager at a two-wheeler spare parts company, was returning home on his bike from Coimbatore Junction railway station.
- Location: Chellappa Goundan Pudur near Madampatti, where the pit was located.
- Cause of Death: Karthikeyan fell into the 16-foot-deep pit, sustaining severe head injuries and died on the spot.
Safety Concerns:
- Police Report: The site had barricades but lacked streetlights and adequate warning signs, which could have contributed to the accident.
- Highways Department Response: Officials stated that safety norms were followed, including the placement of warning boards and reflective stickers, and attributed the accident to possible motorist negligence. They promised to add blinker lights for improved visibility.
Previous Accidents:
- On August 14, I Manikandan, an electrician, fell into a construction pit on the Mayiladuthurai-Tiruvarur Road, leading to a local protest over insufficient site safety.
- On August 19, two young men from Theni died after their two-wheeler hit a mound of soil and fell into a pit on the Nathampatti road.
Current Action:
- A case has been filed under Sections 285 and 106 (i) of BNS. Investigations are ongoing to determine responsibility and prevent future incidents.
