A routine maintenance task ended in tragedy on Sunday when a 60-year-old man lost his life after an electric pole collapsed on him in Thanjavur. The incident occurred near the iconic Big Temple, where P. Gayathri, a local toy shop owner, was receiving help from her father, M. Subramanian of Reddipalayam.

A tree near their shop had grown dangerously close to a live electric line. Following multiple complaints, Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) staff arrived to trim the branches.

However, during the operation, an electric pole unexpectedly toppled, striking Subramanian. He sustained serious injuries and was immediately taken to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. Sadly, doctors there declared him dead on arrival.

The Thanjavur West police have registered a case and are investigating the incident, including possible negligence in the handling of the work.

The tragedy has raised concerns about safety procedures followed during such operations, especially in busy public areas.
