Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to the strong tremors that shook Delhi and surrounding regions, urging citizens to stay calm and follow safety precautions. He also advised residents to remain alert for potential aftershocks, as authorities monitored the situation closely.
The tremors caused many people to leave their homes and take refuge outdoors, particularly in residential complexes across Delhi-NCR. The epicenter of the quake was reported near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan, an area known to experience occasional minor quakes every few years due to its proximity to a nearby lake.
Delhi, classified as Seismic Zone IV in India’s seismic zoning map, is prone to moderate earthquakes, being situated approximately 250 kilometers from the seismically active Himalayan collision zone. The capital experiences frequent shaking from both distant and nearby earthquakes.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, and Delhi Police all quickly addressed the situation. Kejriwal expressed his concern on social media, praying for the safety of everyone, while Delhi Police urged residents to call “112” in case of emergencies. Passengers at New Delhi Railway Station described the tremors as feeling like a fast-moving train underground, with many expressing shock at the intensity of the quake, even though it was only a magnitude 4.
Netizens took to social media to share their experiences, with one user calling it “the scariest few minutes” of their life. This earthquake follows a 7.1 magnitude tremor in Nepal last month that was also felt across northern India, though no significant property damage was reported.
