US President Donald Trump on Monday said that the United States is close to finalising a new trade and economic deal with India that would strengthen cooperation across multiple sectors, including energy, security, and investment.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office during the swearing-in ceremony of his envoy to India, Sergio Gor, Trump said the upcoming agreement would mark a significant shift from previous trade arrangements.
“We’re getting a fair deal, just a fair trade deal,” Trump remarked. “We’re making a deal with India, much different deal than we had in the past.”
The President expressed optimism that negotiations were in their final stages, saying, “We’re getting close,” but did not provide details on the scope or timeline of the agreement.
The prospective deal is expected to cover areas such as energy exports, investment promotion, and defence cooperation, reflecting the deepening strategic partnership between the two democracies.
Experts note that a renewed trade pact could open up new opportunities for US businesses in India’s fast-growing markets, while also giving Indian exporters improved access to the American economy.
The announcement comes amid broader efforts by both sides to diversify global supply chains and reduce dependence on China, a priority for both Washington and New Delhi.
While talks between the two nations have been ongoing for months, Trump’s comments indicate that both sides may be approaching a final framework soon.
