In a bold move, former US President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff and additional penalties on imports from India, citing unfair trade practices. Speaking at a White House press briefing, Trump stated that New Delhi imposes some of the steepest tariffs globally, making trade imbalanced.

“We’re currently in discussions. India is among the top nations with excessive import duties — sometimes even exceeding 150%,” he noted, hinting at ongoing talks with Indian officials.

Trump also linked India’s involvement with BRICS — a group including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — to a challenge against the US dollar. He claimed the alliance was designed to weaken American global influence, especially in financial matters.

“India being part of BRICS — a coalition working against US interests — is alarming,” Trump added. “We won’t allow our currency to be undermined.”

Despite calling Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “friend,” Trump voiced frustration over what he considers a lopsided trade relationship, where India benefits disproportionately. He said India sells heavily to the US while restricting American access to its markets.

He further pointed to India’s continued energy and defense ties with Russia as another reason for the penalties. In a Truth Social post, Trump emphasized India’s high non-tariff barriers and military deals with Moscow.

India responded by affirming its commitment to safeguarding its local industries, stating that negotiations for a balanced trade deal with Washington are ongoing.
