New Delhi/Washington: It was not more than three weeks ago that the White House’s official Twitter handle had followed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and now, it has unfollowed not just the PM but also President Ram Nath Kovind and the Prime Minister’s office.

PM Modi was the only world leader that was followed by the White House’s Twitter handle, which is the official handle of the US administration.

Even the Twitter handle of the Indian Embassy in the USA was unfollowed by the White House, which now follows only 13 accounts.

When the White House followed the PM on April 10, it was seen as the result of the friendship between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Many people saw it as a sign that good things were to follow.

Just a few days before the WhiteHouse followed the PM and the other Indian Twitter accounts, India had permitted the export of hydroxychloroquine, a move that prompted President Trump to call Prime Minister Modi “great” and “really good”.

Trump had even tweeted, “Extraordinary times require even closer cooperation between friends. Thank you India and the Indian people for the decision on HCQ. Will not be forgotten! Thank you Prime Minister @NarendraModi for your strong leadership in helping not just India, but humanity, in this fight!”

The White House’s unfollowing of the PM’s and other Twitter accounts has come as a major surprise to many. The developments have also led to several memes that are now circulating on social media.
